Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Can I get additional EMail addresses
with my account?
A: Yes you can! Additional EMail only accounts are
$15 a year. See OPEN Rates.
Connection Problems:
Q: When I dial in, it keeps asking for my password and I
know I'm putting the right one in. What do I do?
A: 99% of the time this is due to the wrong Username.
Make sure that your User name is in small letters, it
is your User name with OPEN, and that it does not include
@open.org. Ex:doejane is correct, not Jane Doe.
Note: The error message
that you get will not always sound like it is a Password/
User name issue, however if you are being asked for your
password more than once there is something wrong with one
of the two.
Windows users - On rare occasions it will be a corrupt
.pwl file. Go to the Start button, click, select Find,
click on Files or Folders. In the Named box
enter: *.pwl. In Look In make sure it is looking
on your (C:) drive and below that check include sub folders.
Click Find Now and delete any .pwl files it finds.
Restart your machine. If asked for a Windows Login User
name put your User name with us and leave the password
blank. Verify the password as blank this keeps the Windows
Logon from showing every time you start Windows) and that
should be it! You will be prompted for your password the
first time you connect.
Q: When I try to connect all I get is an error message
about DUN (Dial Up Networking).
A: There can be many reasons for this. Please note the
exact wording of the message and check the DUN
page or give us a call.
Q: My 56k modem doesn't connect at 56.
Why not?
A: An average connection for a 56k modem is 40k -
44k.The highest it will connect at, in perfect conditions,
is 53k. If you do not have the latest driver for your
modem you could be getting less than optimal speeds. Also
unplug other equipment using your phone line, in particular
cordless phones. If your line is running through a multiplexer
( takes one line and makes 2)you will not be able to connect
at high speeds. Go to 56k Modems
for more information.
Q: When downloading my email all it does
is show receiving x of xx. It never goes any farther, it
just stays there. what do I do?
A: You have an Email that is "jamming" up
your box. Checking your mail via WebMail
and deleting the message from there usually solves this.
If it doesn't give us a call.
Q: When I go to check my mail, it tells me
it can't find the server. How do I check my settings?
A: Go to Email Setup
for more information on setting up your Email account properly.
Make sure your Incoming and Outgoing Mail Servers are: opengovt.open.org
If you only have one email account make sure you don't
have others listed.
If you have more than one email account make sure they are
set up properly.
Q: How do I set up multiple Email accounts?
A: It depends on the program you are using. Go to
Email Setup for more information or give us a call.
Doing Searches, using
ICQ and other Internet Programs:
Q: How do I search for information?
A: There are many different search engines on the Internet
and they each work a little differently. Be sure to read
their help section before you do any sort of detailed search.
Q: What is ICQ and how do I use it?
A: ICQ (pronounced "I seek you") is a way
for people to communicate instantly on the Internet. AOL
Instant Messenger and ICQ are 2 of the more popular programs
currently in use. For more information on setting up and
using ICQ click here.
Q: I downloaded a file and now I can't
open it. What do I do?
A: If the file ends in .zip (.hqx for Macs) you need
to download a program to "unzip" the file. Click
here for suggested programs to use. If the file doesn't
end in .zip or .hqx you either don't have the program needed
to open the file, or you are not set up to open with it.
Give us a call for help.
